Questions & answers about the 12¢/kWh home charging rebate

Straight answers to what people ask us most: how the rebate is paid, which Autel charger to get, Tesla and other brands, installation and Wi-Fi.

The rebate

How does the 12¢ rebate work?

Your Autel charger reports every kWh it delivers to the Iceberg EV network, and we pay you 12¢ for each one, from your very first kWh. It's paid quarterly by Interac e-transfer, within 25 days of the quarter ending; a quarter worth less than $50 rolls into the next one. You also get a private dashboard page showing your sessions and earnings.

Do I earn on my own car, or only when other people charge?

Your own car. Iceberg EV is a home program: the 12¢ is paid on every kWh your own home charger delivers, and nobody else needs to use it. If you have more than one EV, every kWh from your charger counts.

Is there a deposit, or a contract that locks me in?

There's no deposit for a home charger, and the charger is yours from day one. The agreement runs a year at a time and renews automatically, and either side can end it at any time with 90 days' notice by email. The charger stays yours either way, and any rebate already earned is paid on the next quarterly date. Selling your house ends the agreement automatically.

I use my car for work, deliveries or rideshare. Does that change anything?

No. You earn the same 12¢ on every kWh your home charger delivers. If the vehicle belongs to a company, have a look at the business program.

Is the rebate taxable?

The 12¢ is a rebate that pays back part of the electricity your charger uses, and it is set below your cost. We don't give tax advice, so check with your accountant how it applies to you.

Chargers

Which home EV chargers do you sell?

Three Autel MaxiCharger Level 2 (240-volt) home chargers: the AC Lite 40A (J1772), which plugs into a NEMA 14-50 outlet or can be hardwired, for $599 + HST; the AC Lite 50A J1772, hardwired, for $699 + HST; and the AC Lite 50A NACS (Tesla plug), hardwired, for $699 + HST. The 40A delivers up to 9.6 kW and the 50A models up to 12 kW, and each comes with a 25-foot cable.

I drive a Tesla. Which charger should I get?

The AC Lite 50A NACS. It plugs straight into a Tesla, or any car with a NACS port, with no adapter.

Can I use my Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint or another brand?

Not at the moment. The Iceberg EV network runs Autel MaxiCharger units only, so other brands, including the Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, Wallbox, Emporia, FLO, Lectron and JuiceBox, can't join. If you'd like to talk about switching, email info@icebergev.ca.

I already own an Autel. Can I join?

Yes, and there's nothing to buy. Some older units can't connect, so email info@icebergev.ca with a photo of the label first. Before you connect it to our network, delete every schedule, timer and off-peak setting in the Autel Charge app and set the charging current to your breaker rating.

Getting it and setting it up

How do I get my charger?

Free pickup at 558 Thorburn Road, St. John's (10 am to 4 pm; after hours a ready charger waits in the bin with your name on it), or free shipping anywhere in Newfoundland and Labrador. We test and set up every charger on our network before it goes out, and we email you when it's ready.

Who installs it?

A licensed electrician of your choice mounts it, wires it and sets the amperage to suit your breaker and panel. That work is between you and your electrician; Iceberg EV doesn't do or quote electrical work. Once it's wired, getting it online takes about 10 minutes with our setup guide.

Does it need Wi-Fi? What if my internet goes down?

It connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable. The chargers we sell start charging as soon as you plug in, even if the internet is down: the charger stores the session and sends it when the connection comes back, so the kWh still count. If your internet has been down for more than a day or two, email us so nothing is missed.

Will Iceberg EV ever slow down or pause my charging?

Never. We don't pause, limit, slow or schedule anyone's charging; your charger is available 24/7. If charging seems slower than expected, it's usually the car's own charging limit or the current your electrician set, and we're happy to look at the session from our side.

Should I install charger firmware updates?

No. If the Autel Charge app offers a charger firmware update, don't install it; email info@icebergev.ca first, because firmware changes can affect how the charger connects to our network. Updating the Autel Charge app itself is fine.

Everything else

How do I sign up?

On the home page, tap Join the Network and choose your charger, or choose Bring your own Autel. It takes a couple of minutes and you sign the agreement on the same page.

Is there a referral bonus?

Yes: $50 for you and $50 for your friend, once their charger has delivered 1,000 kWh, paid with the quarterly statement. See the referral terms.

Do you work with businesses and fleets?

Yes. Fleet depots, workplace parking, dealerships and company vehicles charging at employees' homes can all join. New business sites earn 15¢ per kWh for the first 2 years from go-live, then 12¢, a limited-time offer, and every site is scoped on its own terms. See Iceberg EV for Business.

Where do you operate?

Newfoundland and Labrador only: homes and businesses from St. John's and the Avalon to Gander, Corner Brook and Labrador, with free shipping anywhere in the province.
